We have broken down the different steps taken in selecting our wood for the highest product finish to offer you an insight into our processing methodology.
As opposed to our competitors, we at Teak Creation do not rely on third party plantations to supply our factory with wood. In fact, we grow our own trees sustainably and in an eco-friendly way to fulfill the needs of our business!
After the trees have been harvested on the Teak farms, the logs are brought to the factory facility to get sorted. The logs are meticulously inspected and sorted by a compliance team to identify the different wood grade category and dimensions of the logs which are then triaged into piles by size and grade. Teak wood is available in three different quality grades which play a key role in outdoor performance and durability of the furniture. It is therefore highly important to know what is the difference between teak grades and how to distinguish between the highest quality teak and inferior timber.
At Teak Creation, we focus primarily on Grade A Teakwood from 30+ year old trees to offer the highest quality of product finish. Grade A teak is the highest quality teak wood. It refers to timber that is taken from the very centre of the log (heartwood) of a fully mature tree. Grade A teak can be recognized by a uniform, golden brown color, close grains and glossy surface that feels oily to touch. It is high in teak natural oils which play the key role in teak outstanding resistance to outdoor elements by protecting it from unfavorable weather elements and repelling insects. Unfortunately, it makes up only about a fifth to one quarter of the log and as a result, it has a high price.
Grade B teak refers to timber from the outer heartwood section, making up about one fourth to one third of the log. In comparison to grade A teak, grade B teak has a lighter color, uneven grain and less shine. It contains only traces of teak natural oils and as a result, it is unable to withstand the exposure to the outdoor extremes without protective treatments. But even then, it doesn’t last even close as long as furniture made from the highest quality teak.
Grade C teak is an inferior quality teak wood. It refers to timber from the outer sections of a mature log (sapwood) and logs of immature trees. Grade C teak contains virtually no teak natural protective oils, has a very uneven color and is easily damaged because it is very soft. Furniture that is made from grade C teak is even considered unsuitable for indoor use due to its softness that makes it highly susceptible to damage. Although it is taken from the very same tree species, grade C teak has no similarity to the highest quality teak neither in regard to outdoor performance, beauty or durability. Grade C teak garden furniture is relatively inexpensive but it has a very short lifespan even if it is treated with protective coating or periodically oiled.
Please note that grade B and C teak furniture is sometimes chemically treated to make it look as if it would be made from the highest quality timber. It can be recognized by a darker color but most people can’t really see the difference between the two, unless seen next to each other. If you are after the highest quality teak furniture, you are recommended to buy from reputable manufacturers. Our purpose is to fulfill that need!
After the logs have been categorized, they undergo sawmill processing to remove bark and separate the different layers of grade found in the log.
The logs that have been processed at the sawmill will now pass two weeks in our dehumidifier rooms. This process will dry the wood to less than 8% humidity per cubic meter and ensure that our products will not expand or shrink with time as climate shifts. Each batch is controlled with digital equipment to certify the humidity threshold. Once dried, the logs are treated against mushrooms and bugs - they are subsequently marked with respective unit identifiers to be sent over for production.
Now that the raw material has been sustainably sourced, graded, categorized and treated, production can start. Each unit is assigned work orders to fulfill and receives designs, technical specifications and the necessary amount of wood. Our team of carpenters have been carefully selected to deliver stunning results with each piece created.
Once the carpenters have finished their part, the pieces are then sanded and brushed with sealer and oil for extra protection.
Your pieces are now ready to ship! We are honored that you have chosen us to fulfill your orders and we can't wait to hear back from you on your shopping experience and satisfaction.
